SEIU Is In The Business of Drowning Out Voices

Another good reason to use transparency rather than McCain-Feingold for reform

POSTED AT 2:20 PM ON JANUARY 29, 2010 BY ED MORRISSEY

In his State of the Union speech this week, Barack Obama bemoaned a Supreme Court decision that allowed corporations to spend their money on advertising in the final weeks of an election cycle and to spend as much money as they like doing so. Obama declared that it would mean a deluge of money that would drown out the voices of ordinary citizens. However, McCain-Feingold didn’t do anything to prevent that kind of a deluge, and one case in particular demonstrates how the money flows more dishonestly and with less transparency in a campaign-finance regulatory scheme.... http://hotair.com/archives/2010/01/29/another-good-reason-to-use-transparency-rather-than-mccain-feingold-for-reform/

Roberto Micheletti, interrim President of Honduras, steps down today to allow for the peaceful transition of power to the newly elected president of the tiny nation, Porfirio Lobo Sosa. Why Is Senator Kirk Still Voting on Legislation?

The Senate has voted on three pieces of legislation today that required 60 votes–to raise the debt ceiling to $14.3 trillion, to reduce the deficit by establishing five-year discretionary spending caps, and Ben Bernanke’s confirmation–all of which interim Senator Paul Kirk (D-MA) has voted on. Lech Walesa

Poland's brash union organizer stood up to the Kremlin and dealt the Eastern bloc a fatal blow

By TIMOTHY GARTON ASH

Lech Walesa, the fly, feisty, mustachioed electrician from Gdansk, shaped the 20th century as the leader of the Solidarity movement that led the Poles out of communism. It is one of history's great ironies that the nearest thing we have ever seen to a genuine workers' revolution was directed against a so-called workers' state. Poland was again the icebreaker for the rest of Central Europe in the "velvet revolutions" of 1989. Walesa's contribution to the end of communism in Europe, and hence the end of the cold war, stands beside those of his fellow Pole, Pope John Paul II, and the Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev.... http://www.yachtingnet.com/time/time100/leaders/profile/walesa.html

Morning Bell: A Speech Only Washington Could Love

Posted January 28th, 2010 at 8:54am

The more things change, the more things stay the same. A little over a year ago, President Barack Obama came to office expecting to pass a “big bang” of policy changes all in the first year: health care, cap-and-trade, and banking regulation. With the big-bang strategy officially a failure, President Obama’s State of the Union address last night desperately tried to keep all of these legislative efforts alive while also acknowledging that the country has firmly rejected his policy agenda... http://blog.heritage.org/2010/01/28/morning-bell-a-speech-only-washington-could-love/?utm_source=Newsletter&utm_medium=Email&utm_campaign=Morning%2BBell

President Obama Is Asking For New Free Speech Laws!

The President says he is showing "deference", but his remarks were far more disrespectful than the Justice's facial expression and shaking of his head and mouthing "That's not true".

But, that aside, what nobody is focusing on is the fact that President Obama is asking for a change in our free speech laws! Would we trust this man with our freedom of speech?

The first amendment says, "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances." Congress shall make no law. It does not say that this is only the right of individuals - or even only American citizens. If that were so, SEIU, ACORN, FOX News, MSNBC, etc. would have no right to the freedom of speech. (We might not even be allowed to read anything written by the Copenhagen crowd.) Wasn't it the SEIU that gave President Obama his massive campaign contributions? Even the idea that foreigners would control our elections is ridiculous! All the ruling did was open free speech to all groups across the board to air commercials and pamphlets, etc.

We the people have a right to hear all of the information that is available. We do not want any group of people to be muzzled.

PELOSI AND REID PLOT SECRET PLAN FOR OBAMACARE

The Bush Tax Cuts Are Due To Expire in 2011

In the campaign President Obama promised that there would be not tax increases for 95% of Americans. But, if he allows the Bush tax cuts to expire, there will be a tax increase for everyone across the board.

Keep The Cuts

Posted 01/25/2010 07:02 PM ET

Taxes: On the eve of President Obama's first State of the Union address, two Democratic congressmen are advising him to extend the Bush tax cuts instead of letting them expire. Now that's a stimulus.

We hear that the administration is considering taking a more populist tack as it sails the choppy political waters of 2010. Some of President Obama's plans reportedly include several tax tidbits for the "middle class," including a doubling of the child care tax credit for families below $85,000 in income, and $1.6 billion for child care and a cap on student loan payments.

Such transparent populism aside, if the recent bank-bashing is any sign, the ship of state is still being steered into the iceberg ahead... http://www.investors.com/NewsAndAnalysis/Article.aspx?id=519047

Obama Picks Up the Hatchet?

We are doubtful. He should give back the stimulus slush fund, lay off the czars, and cut many government jobs and programs. Then we might think he was getting serious.

Obama to propose freeze on government spending

By Lori Montgomery
Washington Post Staff Writer
Tuesday, January 26, 2010; A01

Under mounting pressure to rein in mammoth budget deficits, President Obama will propose in his State of the Union address a three-year freeze on federal funding that is not related to national security, a concession to public concern about government spending that could dramatically curtail Obama's legislative ambitions.

The freeze would take effect in October and limit the overall budget for agencies other than the military, veterans affairs, homeland security and certain international programs to $447 billion a year for the remainder of Obama's first term, senior administration officials said Monday, imposing sharp limits on his ability to begin initiatives in education, the environment and other areas of domestic policy.... http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/01/25/AR2010012503549_pf.html

After this year of total out of control spending, this rings hollow with voters, who see this as only an attempt to appear to be a "populist" after the Scott Brown win. Remember how he was against spending freezes during the campaign? And remember how he was going to cut the deficit? And there were going to be no more earmarks, etc. etc. etc......

"The Mystery of the Missing Thermometers" - Climategate Continued

Scientists using selective temperature data, skeptics say

BY RICHARD FOOT, CANWEST NEWS SERVICE JANUARY 21, 2010

Call it the mystery of the missing thermometers.

Two months after “climategate” cast doubt on some of the science behind global warming, new questions are being raised about the reliability of a key temperature database, used by the United Nations and climate change scientists as proof of recent planetary warming.

Two American researchers allege that U.S. government scientists have skewed global temperature trends by ignoring readings from thousands of local weather stations around the world, particularly those in colder altitudes and more northerly latitudes, such as Canada.... http://www.vancouversun.com/technology/Scientists+using+selective+temperature+data+skeptics/2468634/story.html

Democrats Spinning the Supreme Court Ruling to Try to Split the Tea Party Movement

President Obama is playing a game of words to confuse the issue. He would like to stoke hatred for big corporations and to persuade you to agree to muzzle the speech of corporations that would speak out against candidates that support Cap and Trade and higher taxes. He calls these issues "common sense", but we know they will hurt the economy and cause companies to have to lay off workers.

We the people need to hear all of the information from both sides before an election.

Democrats Seek to Counter Court Ruling on Political Spending

By JESS BRAVIN And BRODY MULLINS

WASHINGTON—Democrats are exploring ways to counter a Supreme Court ruling that threw out a century of limits on corporate political spending, hoping it will hand them a populist issue to stem a Republican tide rising on public anger...

Democrats hope to paint the Republican position as favoring "even more big money and corporate special interests influencing the outcome of elections," Mr. Van Hollen said....

Brian Walsh, a spokesman for the Senate Republican campaign arm, said Democrats are putting their partisan interests ahead of the "constitutional right to free speech and fair elections."...

In recent elections, most political ads sponsored by independent groups have favored Democrats. Labor unions and wealthy Democrats have sent millions of dollars to these groups, which tailored their advertisements to comply with now-void restrictions. Both unions and Republican-leaning groups such as chambers of commerce can now spend freely to promote or disparage candidates....

Founding Fathers Smiling After Supreme Court Campaign Finance Ruling

By Ken Klukowski

- FOXNews.com

In the wake of the Supreme Court's ruling on Thursday, every American should be worried when the president of the United States starts threatening the highest court in the land... The Court’s opinion went on to note that the government’s theory of being able to censor organizations that speak to the public simply because that organization is a corporation with the ability to accumulate money would enable the government to go after the media. Every major press outlet is a corporation, and all have vast sums of money. The government’s argument could be used to justify censorship of the press. When that happenes, the First Amendment dies...

Still Not Transparent

Boehner: Democrats Vote to Keep Health Care Negotiations Secret
GOP Leader: “Democrats are already showing they haven’t learned the lessons of the Massachusetts special election.”

Washington, Jan 20 -

House Republican Leader John Boehner (R-OH) issued the following statement after House Democrats voted to keep health care reform negotiations secret by rejecting consideration of Rep. Vern Buchanan’s (R-FL) resolution (H. Res. 847) making these talks public:

“By voting to keep health care reform negotiations secret, Democrats are already showing they haven’t learned the lessons of the Massachusetts special election. Despite repeatedly promising these talks would be public and broadcast on C-SPAN, President Obama and Washington Democrats continue to keep the American people in the dark. These secret deliberations are a breeding ground for backroom deals and legislative landmines that end up not being discovered until it’s too late. Only by having full transparency can the American people find out who’s getting the sweetheart deals and who’s getting the short end of the stick. Republicans will continue to seek any and all means to pass Rep. Buchanan’s transparency resolution so we can have the public health care talks the American people deserve.”

NOTE: Rep. Buchanan’s bipartisan resolution, which has more than 150 co-sponsors, is part of a transparency initiativeRepublicans introduced in November to make Congress more open and accountable to the people it serves. Last week, Rep. Buchanan filed a discharge petition which, if signed by 218 Representatives, would force a vote on his transparency resolution.
