Bill would give president emergency control of Internet
August 28, 2009 12:34 AM PDT
Internet companies and civil liberties groups were alarmed this spring when a U.S. Senate bill proposed handing the White House the power to disconnect private-sector computers from the Internet.
They're not much happier about a revised version that aides to Sen. Jay Rockefeller, a West Virginia Democrat, have spent months drafting behind closed doors. CNET News has obtained a copy of the 55-page draft of S.773 (excerpt), which still appears to permit the president to seize temporary control of private-sector networks during a so-called cybersecurity emergency.... http://news.cnet.com/8301-13578_3-10320096-38.html

Democratic Party HQ in Denver vandalized...by A DEMOCRAT!
Tuesday, August 25, 2009
The Democratic Party's Denver office was attacked by two vandals last night. The two reportedly covered their faces before shattering several windows with hammers and riding away on bicycles. Behind those windows were posters depicting Barack Obama and calling for support of his health care scheme.
Naturally there was immediate outrage among local Democrats when the story broke, and Republicans, Conservatives and anyone else opposed to Barack Obama's health care scheme were blamed and condemned for it.
Unluckily for the Democrats however, the police quickly snarfed up one of the vandals, and it turned out to be a committed leftist (read: "Democrat") by the name of Maurice Schwenkler… http://lagniappeslair.blogspot.com/2009/08/democratic-party-hq-in-denver.html

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., has delivered his ultimatum to Republicans in the Senate. And it is nothing short of a coup of representative government. Either Republicans bow to the demands of the Senate's Democratic leaders and pass a "bipartisan" bill, or Reid will invoke reconciliation, a process that requires only 51 vote to pass the bill.... http://www.washingtonexaminer.com/opinion/columns/OpEd-Contributor/Stop-Reid_s-ObamaCare-_by-any-legislative-means-necessary_-8147241-54356602.html

Most red ink ever: $9 trillion over next decade
By JIM KUHNHENN, Associated Press Writer
WASHINGTON – In a chilling forecast, the White House is predicting a 10-year federal deficit of $9 trillion — more than the sum of all previous deficits since America's founding. And it says by the next decade's end the national debt will equal three-quarters of the entire U.S. economy.
But before President Barack Obama can do much about it, he'll have to weather recession aftershocks including unemployment that his advisers said Tuesday is still heading for 10 percent.
Overall, White House and congressional budget analysts said in a brace of new estimates that the economy will shrink by 2.5 to 2.8 percent this year even as it begins to climb out of the recession. Those estimates reflect this year's deeper-than-expected economic plunge... http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090825/ap_on_go_pr_wh/us_obama_economy

No Maine Miracle Cure
Another state 'public option' that failed.
Want a preview of ObamaCare in action? Sneak a look at what has happened in Maine. In 2003, the state to great fanfare enacted its own version of universal health care. Democratic Governor John Baldacci signed the plan into law with a bevy of familiar promises. By 2009, it would cover all of Maine's approximately 128,000 uninsured citizens. System-wide controls on hospital and physician costs would hold down insurance premiums. There would be no tax increases. The program was going to provide insurance for everyone and save businesses and patients money at the same time.
After five years, fiscal realities as brutal as the waves that crash along Maine's famous coastline have hit the insurance plan. The system that was supposed to save money has cost taxpayers $155 million and is still rising... http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052970204619004574322401816501182.html?mod=djemEditorialPage

Sarah Palin Asks For Health Care Tort Reform
No Health Care Reform Without Legal Reform
Share
President Obama's health care "reform" plan has met with significant criticism across the country. Many Americans want change and reform in our current health care system. We recognize that while we have the greatest medical care in the world, there are major problems that we must face, especially in terms of reining in costs and allowing care to be affordable for all. However, as we have seen, current plans being pushed by the Democratic leadership represent change that may not be what we had in mind -- change which poses serious ethical concerns over the government having control over our families’ health care decisions. In addition, the current plans greatly increase costs of health care, while doing lip service toward controlling costs.... http://www.facebook.com/sarahpalin?ref=search&sid=1685952819.1781758158..1#/sarahpalin?v=app_2347471856&viewas=1685952819&ref=search

What Soviet Medicine Teaches Us
Mises Daily by Yuri N. Maltsev | Posted on 8/21/2009 12:00:00 AM
In 1918, the Soviet Union became the first country to promise universal "cradle-to-grave" healthcare coverage, to be accomplished through the complete socialization of medicine. The "right to health" became a "constitutional right" of Soviet citizens.
The proclaimed advantages of this system were that it would "reduce costs" and eliminate the "waste" that stemmed from "unnecessary duplication and parallelism" — i.e., competition.... http://mises.org/story/3650

Based on a theory known as Keynesianism, politicians are resuscitating the notion that more government spending can stimulate an economy. This mini-documentary produced by the Center for Freedom and Prosperity Foundation examines both theory and evidence and finds that allowing politicians to spend more money is not a recipe for better economic performance.

The Death Book for Veterans
By JIM TOWEY
Last year, bureaucrats at the VA's National Center for Ethics in Health Care advocated a 52-page end-of-life planning document, "Your Life, Your Choices." It was first published in 1997 and later promoted as the VA's preferred living will throughout its vast network of hospitals and nursing homes. After the Bush White House took a look at how this document was treating complex health and moral issues, the VA suspended its use. Unfortunately, under President Obama, the VA has now resuscitated "Your Life, Your Choices."... http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052970204683204574358590107981718.html

Why Obama Lost the Health Care Debate
By CHARLES KRAUTHAMMER | Posted Friday, August 14, 2009 4:20 PM PT
In the 48 hours of June 15-16, President Obama lost the health care debate.
First, a letter from the Congressional Budget Office to Sen. Edward Kennedy reported that his health committee's bill would add $1 trillion in debt over the next decade. Then the CBO reported that the other Senate bill, being written by the Finance Committee, would add $1.6 trillion.
The central contradiction of ObamaCare was fatally exposed: From his first address to Congress, Obama insisted on the dire need for restructuring the health care system because out-of-control costs were bankrupting the Treasury and wrecking the U.S. economy — yet the Democrats' plans would make the problem worse... http://www.ibdeditorials.com/IBDArticles.aspx?id=335141924486653
